Fins Flashback-My First Pair of Heavy Rubber Ol' School Diving Fins were The IDI Frog Foot
and the Tried,True and Tested, Scubapro Jet Fin.
The Open heel Foot Pockets on both seemed to be Molded in a Time Before the Modern Dive Boot. My feet would sometimes Cramp When on long surface swims.
This Problem was remedied by switching to plastic blade fins, the Mares Plana Avanti and later the Quattro.
I loved the foot pocket but not the lightweight plastic blades when diving in cold water with thick wetsuits, drysuits and thick booties.
The Search continued. A Pair of Heavy Rubber Split Fins came onto the scene and stole the show for a few years. These were the Apollo Bio - Split fins with Natures Wing blades. These were perfect for me on long surface swims and I loved the weight. As they broke in and would become less efficient, I yet again seeked more for a maneuverable fin for underwater videography and photography.
The Jet Fin had a new size which they called the XXL and that was close. Loved the weight and the ability to turn while keeping my eye on the subject and my hands on the camera. I wear a size 11 Nike Running shoe and almost 6 feet tall and weigh 185 to 195 most of the time. Using a Drysuit and Wearing Varying Brands of Heavier Steel tanks kept me always curious as to what other equipment could do to better my enjoyment. The jet fin foot pocket was close but not perfect for me. My left foot is a little larger than my other left foot and it usually resulted in a sore left toe. One Customer who took my side mount seminar told me he wanted to get the new Mares all Rubber tech fin. I told him I hadn’t tried it and didn’t know anyone who had, so why don’t you try my jet fins until I get in some of the new Mares fins.
The Mares fins came in and he picked them up and took them diving . Problem Solved right ?
Nope, he hated the new fins he said they were too wide. So now he wants to return those fins and buy a pair of you guessed it, Jet Fins.
Ok I said I’ll take those fins and try them while exchanging for a new pair of jet fins. I thought, if he didn’t like them, I’m probobly not going to like them either. They looked similar to a Jet but had these big triangular holes on each side of the fin. Water would just flow right through. So I tried on my new, used fins with my new Drysuit and they seemed perfect, almost if they were made for me custom. They came with springs already installed and away I went. That was 10 years ago. I loved them and I still use them.
They Have Held up Nicely and I remain convinced that these are one of the best tech style fins available. So why am I still searching for another fin ? I’m not really Searching per se, just curious. Whenever we at Holywood Divers see a new product that has appeal in some category, design, new construction methods, materials or weight we ask if it would be a good choice for us and therefore our customers.
Manufacturers are always making Improvements or experimenting with propulsion and many times they make minimal headway while other times revolutionary and effective changes. Hollywood Divers sees these changes, we listen, we experiment on ourselves on our days off or when we are teaching varied levels of diving.
This Brings us up to Date in 2025 with the Newest Tech Style Fin. We think it will be a sought after model because of its modern foot pocket and well designed Fin Blade.
