I became Interested in the Book Whalefall, by Daniel Kraus after meeting some of the Crew who are in L.A. Working on the film. I downloaded the Book and Began Casually Listening to the Story. Sometimes Audiobooks don't do it for me because of the choice of narrator. I have Read a few books about Diving over the Years and many good ones. Most are tales of Something true, Non-Fictional and Recounts of an Event. Titles Like More than Nine Lives by Al and Norma Hanson, Into the Lions Mouth by Michael Smart, The Last Dive or Shadow Divers.
Whenever I read a winner that keeps me interested I then begin to look for the audiobook so I can be sure I didn't miss any of the story details. The Narration for me is a key element in enjoyment. This Whalefall Experience was backwards from usual order and I did not miss out on a single detail. The Narrator, Kirby Heyborne seems to emotionally match the stories concern, memories and frustrations in all Chapters.
This Story is pure fiction and requires belief in the "Truth is Stranger than Fiction, unless it is compelling fiction" mantra.
We are guided through the Family Struggles of Jay and his Dad, Mitt. The Type of Folk that are Water Absorbent, Even as it is Cold water from around Monterey California. Mitt is the Conflicted, Tough to Love Dad who gets his Son into Scuba Diving at Young Age. He does this out of Love for the Ocean and Potentially to Toughen the Young Jay.
Jay Decides to Leave Home before he finishes high school, mainly because of the strained relationship with his Dad. Mitt Becomes Terminally ill and never really reconciles with Jay before he passes on. These Strained Relations propel Jay to Solo dive Monastery Beach. The Story Goes into Detail about Dive Preparation, Mental Readiness, Equipment and it's Function. Kraus even gets brand specific in the book as if to convey that he is not only an author but an actual diver.
Although this Fictional Story is Highly Improbable like many books, TV Shows and Films are, it is believable enough and Works through the The Ever Lowering Tank Pressure as a guide to never give up, continue on and learn more about Jay's Relationship with his Dad, Old Salt Legend that indirectly put him in this harrowing predicament. How will he Navigate the various, Flesh, Liquids, Tubes, Fellow Life forms and Heartbreaking Memories that are Also Trapped inside the Massive Spermwhale.
