During this one-day virtual classroom session you will learn about optics underwater, shooting techniques, cameras, digital formats, housings, filters, media management and more. Any student who completes this class can continue their education and receive a NAUI Specialty Course Certification C-card for  “Underwater Cinematography”.
This course is taught by cinematographer and NAUI instructor Vance Burberry. Vance has been a professional cinematographer on land and water for 30 years and a NAUI instructor for 16 years. Virtual Classroom Day Overview:
Live Virtual Class via Zoom: 9:30am – 4pm PT 
w/ 1 hour break
  • Optics in the underwater environment
  • Shooting techniques including strategic positioning to find the shot and camera moves
  • Dome ports, flat ports, and mini dome ports
  • Optical refraction, aberration, radial distortion, virtual image
  • Pros and cons of different lenses
  • Understanding the relationship between exposure and focus
  • Review of filters for color and exposure
  • Lighting techniques using natural and artificial light
  • Review various housings
  • The correct way to set up your housing
  • Digital camera formats including Super 35mm Pro-Cinema
  • Codecs including Apple ProRes 4:2:2 HQ, 4:4:4, H.264, Log-C, and Raw
  • Media types, storage, and management of files
  • Discuss editing software and color correction
  • Gear setup and safety 
Continue your education for optional NAUI certification… 
After completing this classroom day, you may opt to continue your education with a half-day Sunday pool session (July 2020 - usually at Cleveland High School in Reseda, California) and 1 Day/  3 open water dives at Catalina Island (Dates TBD).You are required to have open water certification or higher if you wish to participate in the full certification dives. Cold water diving experience is preferred, but if you need extra training prior to the pool session we can arrange that. 

TBD - and Optional Catalina boat fees, camera rentals, and scuba rentals are not included. If you decide to continue your education - We will offer 50% discount on any rentals while enrolled in the openwater portion of the course. Let us know if you will need to rent scuba and/or underwater camera equipment. 
Pool Half-Day Overview: 
  • Camera setup and breakdown
  • Pre-dive checks for housing integrity 
  • Focus check underwater using focus chart
  • Perform smooth, accurate camera moves using buoyancy control
  • Shoot subjects while navigating obstacle course
  • Shoot test shots with dome ports
  • Underwater communication with your buddy while filming
Open Water 3 Dives (Must complete classroom and pool to attend):
  • Plan dives including site review, buddy checks, and emergency plan
  • Pre-dive equipment check including camera, housing, and dive gear
  • Practice shooting sea life and your buddy
  • Shoot at various depths experimenting with various exposure indexes and loss of color
  • Debrief between dives and critique techniques 
  • Break down gear post-dive
